I find it very rewarding to create fine, contemporary furniture that meets the specific needs of my clients. My goal is to build heirloom quality pieces that will offer a lifetime of comfort and elegance.
Consultation and design time with clients is a critical part of my creative process. My skills and the styles I've worked in are far ranging.
The challenge for me is to realize the client's vision with a piece or a complete room of furniture that provides comfort, utility, and ultimately beauty to those who live in it.
How do We Begin?
A brief description of the work.
Sketches or pictures you collect can be valuable. Identify furniture styles you would like to see incorporated into the work, e.g. Arts and Crafts style, Oriental, or Scandinavian design. Be certain you let me know what you want in the way of sketches or drawings. How much detail do you want? How much artistic freedom and interpretation do you expect?
Dimensions
If you are considering a large commission, such as a dining table and chairs, it is important to consider the dimensions of the room. How will it look when occupying a large portion of the room? How many people do you want to seat? Should the size be adjustable with extra leaves? Are there existing pieces in the room which it must complement?
Drawings and Models
I like to start out making scaled drawings to begin the design process. After we have gotten a good idea of the direction we want to proceed in, I will often make a full sized model so that we can see the future pice in three dimentions and work out any problems of proportion and small details.
Types of Wood and Finish
There are many types of wood. For my furniture I enjoy using both domestic and exotic hardwoods in my work. I build pieces using solid wood and shop sawn veneers laid up on a high quality plywood core. I feel a sense of honor in being able to work with such wonderful materials. That is why I most often choose to use a clear, shellac and wax or a penetrating tung oil finish, which brings out the luster and beauty in these woods.
My work will provide you with fine furniture of enduring quality and elegance that will last a lifetime and continue to add comfort and grace to your home.
I welcome the opportunity to work with clients interested in individual pieces as well those wishing to create furnishings or lighting for an entire room, home, or outdoor patio or deck. Private milling services are available to clients who have wood they plan to provide.
